In 1740, French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve released an intriguing twist on the classic fairy tale. In the story, a young woman is held captive by a monster in a castle, until it eventually transpires that the monster is actually a man placed under a curse. The two fall in love, thus breaking the curse. Of course, the version we’re all familiar with is the 1991 Disney version (and its live-action adaptation in 2017).
